Cameras out of boxes, developers out of plants, experimental celluloid photography through processes of collaboration, foraging, home-brewing and play.
For artists, non-artist and inbetween-ers, photographers (past, present and future), experimenters, image-makers, image destroyers, potion-makers, photo-lovers, photo-skeptics, witches, eco warriors, eco-slackers, analogue-ers, ad-hoc-ers and everyone in-between. For adult-kids, and kid-adults.
Minimum age: 10 years old (unless younger ages are specified in advance and workshop can be adapted). Maximum age: none!

The handmade image is a collaborative 3 stage workshop involving the construction of photographic devices and home-brew developing chemistry via accessible analogue and digital tools. It aims to explain, manipulate and analyse the production of the photographic image in a playful, eco-friendly and explorative setting. With the focus directed on the slowing down and enjoyment of the photographic process, the workshop celebrates the production of the image more than the product. Whilst the photographic results are often interesting and enigmatic, the participants will find that the
experimental nature of the process manipulates the original reality that they wanted to capture. In fact, the distorting effects of the home-made camera and developers often mean that the results say more about the process than the subject. This takes the photograph away from the portrayal of an individual subject and focuses it on a collaborative, intuitive process, which can lead us to rethink the way we perceive image production.
We learn about early photography and experimental photographic processes. We make 35mm film cameras out of matchboxes and learn how to use them to take pictures. We experiment with light and exposure. We take our homemade cameras on a walk the neighbourhood around TWIXTlab to take photos, whilst collecting water (rain, fountains, puddles) and organic material (grass, flowers, vegetables) to develop our film.
We learn about how celluloid film is made. We home-brew our developers and experiment with fixers, we reveal our results and discuss the happy and unhappy accidents that have formed

Rowan Tara de Freitas is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based between the UK and mainland Europe. She uses photography, film, writing and performance to create meeting points between live, recorded and observed actions, and to play with the boundaries of documentation and storytelling. Through dialogue surrounding public and private space, language, intimacy and personal histories she investigates everyday phenomena that link the personal to the political. Often experimenting with celluloid film and hand-made photo chemistry, she brings the process out of the lab and into a collaborative and performative setting. She has participated in three international artist residencies; TANTEO, Sound Development City and MultiMadeira. She has collaborated with artists, musicians, sound artists, choreographers and theatre
practitioners and has performed and exhibited work in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Serbia, Greece and Mexico.

Το handmade image είναι ένα συνεργατικό εργαστήριο που συνίσταται στη σπιτική χημεία και την κατασκευή φωτογραφικών συσκευών, μέσα από προσβάσιμα αναλογικά και ψηφιακά εργαλεία. Στοχεύει να εξηγήσει, να διαχειριστεί και να αναλύσει την παραγωγή της φωτογραφικής εικόνας με έναν παιγνιώδη, φιλικό προς το περιβάλλον και διερευνητικό τρόπο. Καθώς οι φωτογραφίες που θα προκύψουν θα είναι συχνά ενδιαφέρουσες και αινιγματικές, οι συμμετέχοντες θα ανακαλύψουν πως η πειραματική φύση της διαδικασίας διαμορφώνει την πραγματικότητα που θα ήθελαν να καταγράψουν. Στην ουσία, τα παραμορφωτικά αποτελέσματα που προκύπτουν από τα σπιτικά χημικά και τη χειροποίητη φωτογραφική συσκευή, οδηγούν συχνά στο συμπέρασμα πως το τελικό προϊόν μπορεί να πει περισσότερα για τη διαδικασία που ακολουθήθηκε από ό,τι μπορεί το ίδιο το απεικονιζόμενο θέμα. Κάτι τέτοιο πηγαίνει τη φωτογραφία ένα βήμα πέρα από την απεικόνιση ενός μεμονωμένου θέματος. Εστιάζουμε σε μια συνεργατική ενστικτώδη διαδικασία, η οποία μπορεί να μας κάνει να ξανασκεφτούμε τον τρόπο που αντιλαμβανόμαστε την παραγωγή εικόνων.

11πμ-4μμ: συλλογή//
Μαθαίνουμε για την πρώιμη φωτογραφία και για πειραματικές φωτογραφικές διαδικασίες. Κατασκευάζουμε φωτογραφικές συσκευές για φιλμ 35mm από σπιρτόκουτα και μαθαίνουμε πώς να τις χρησιμοποιούμε για να τραβάμε φωτογραφίες. Πειραματιζόμαστε με το φως και την έκθεση. Βγαίνουμε με τις χειροποίητες φωτογραφικές συσκευές μας για μια βόλτα στη γειτονιά γύρω από το TWIXTlab για να βγάλουμε φωτογραφίες. Ταυτόχρονα συλλέγουμε νερό και οργανική ύλη για να εμφανίσουμε το φιλμ.

Μαθαίνουμε πώς φτιάχνεται το φιλμ σελουλόζης. Παρασκευάζουμε τα χημικά εμφάνισης και πειραματιζόμαστε με φιξατίφ, εμφανίζουμε τα αποτελέσματά μας και συζητάμε τα ευτυχή και ατυχή …ατυχήματα που οδήγησαν σε αυτά.
8μμ-10μμ: παρουσίαση//
Τελική παρουσίαση των αποτελεσμάτων με προβολή και ανοιχτή στο κοινό συζήτηση.
